Urban Grub is a large, loud, heavily designed restaurant in the 8th Avenue South corridor that has built a following largely on the strength of its atmosphere and its willingness to be a big, fun night out. The concept covers a lot of ground — a sprawling menu with something for everyone, a serious bar program, a room designed for groups — and it succeeds at creating an enjoyable environment. Where it struggles is in the gap between the experience's ambitions and the cooking's actual execution.
The menu is too large. A kitchen trying to produce this many things across this many categories is almost mathematically unable to execute all of them at the level the pricing suggests. Some dishes are fine. Some are genuinely good. Others arrive as evidence of a kitchen stretched past its capacity for quality control. The inconsistency across the menu is the defining characteristic of the dining experience, and at these prices, inconsistency is not a reasonable trade-off.
The bar program is the strongest element and the place where the operation's investment in quality is most visible. The cocktail list shows genuine thought, the spirits selection is serious, and the team behind the bar clearly knows what it's doing. If Urban Grub were primarily a bar with an abbreviated food menu, it would probably be excellent.
Nope on the food-forward dining experience. If you want a fun, buzzy bar with good cocktails and an accessible menu for groups, Urban Grub delivers. If you're coming for a serious dinner at the price points this kitchen charges, the inconsistency makes it hard to recommend over the more focused restaurants nearby.
